Kabul (Afghanistan) – U.S. Department of Defense on Tuesday released the names of two U.S. Marines who were killed in Western Afghanistan on Sunday.
The two Marines died of wounds suffered during a combat engagement with enemy forces in Western Badghis province.
The killed Marines were named as:
- Gunnery Sgt. Jonathan W. Gifford, 34, of Palm Bay, Florida, assigned to 2nd Marine Special Operations Battalion, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina
Gunnery Sgt. Daniel J. Price, 27, of Holland, Michigan, assigned to 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion, Camp Pendleton, California.
There have been 205 U.S. military fatalities in Afghanistan in 2012 to time.
Since beginning of the U.S. military intervention in Afghanistan, 2069 American military personnel have been killed in various insurgent attacks throughout the country since 2001.
The year 2010 was the deadliest for the U.S. military in Afghanistan with 499 deaths reported.
